I should add that this does not mean helicon will always give better results than Zerene. So overall I was very pleasantly suprised at the performance of Helicon which has come a long way since i first tried it.
The other rather nice characteristic of helicon was it did not produce sensor spot trails (it seems to have an algorithm to remove them built in), these trails cause me more hassle when using zerene than anything else. The helicon focus stacks had slightly less haloing in every case with no noticeable differences in auto shot alignment. One example pair of shots below but all the stack comparisons had the same characteristics. On my slightly primitive core duo 2.8ghz, 2gb ram winxp machine, helicon was noticeably slightly faster at producing and then saving the stack Bottom line - the Helicon outputs where as good as those from Zerene, but they arrived in a third of the time. C output were a wash - they looked like the same image. With zerene I did my normal PMax type stack. This time it was Zerene’s output that had less haloing and better saturation when looking at the depth maps. The helicon interface was pretty intuitive (unlike the previous version I had tried) and I left it on default settings which is a dmap type stack. I took 4 stack sets of around 5 to 7 shots each and stacked them in Helicon and zerene. Because I shoot by hand and because of the high contrast edges you get around drops, this can be quite a test for a focus stacking programmewhere you often get nasty halo rings. I tried a quick 2 shot focus stack of a holly leaf skeleton which zerene managed very well but helicon did not manage to auto align properly and I ended up with a lot of duplications - not a promising start.Īnyway yesterday morning I puposely did some shots of raindrops on columbine leaf formations for doing some test stacks.
